- I bought a LifeStyle 28.8 for my girlfriend's Mac, and found that the
- (hideous) user's manual didn't have a single word about Mac configuration.
- There were a couple paragraphs for the Un*x folks, and the rest of the
- manual was for the DOS/Win crowd.
-
- This is pretty pathetic, as setting the Power/LifeStyle for Mac use is
- really simple (as follows):
-
- Make sure you have a hardware-handshake cable to connect modem to Mac.
-
- Start up terminal program (White knight, Zterm, etc.)
-
- Type: AT <--wakes the modem up, sets DTE/DCE speed
-
- Modem: OK <-- Modem accepts command
-
- Type: AT&F <-- reset modem to factory config, just for baseline
-
- Modem: OK <-- Modem accepts command
-
- Type: AT&D\V4 <-- modem ignores DTR, connect message shows modem
- speed/modulation/protocol (the \V4 part is optional, I just like to know)
-
- Modem: OK <-- Modem accepts command
-
- Type: AT&W&W1 <-- Write Mac config to non-volatile memory location 1 and
- 2, modem loads from location 1 on power-up.
-
- Modem: OK <-- Modem accepts command
-
-
- That's all that's required; you can check to verify that the config is OK,
- as follows:
-
- Turn modem off, wait 3 seconds, turn modem on.
-
- Type: AT&V <-- displays current and non-volatile memory contents.
-
- Check the resulting data-glob to see that the &D and &V4 values are set-
- if not, try the above sequence again (and check with &V before writing to
- non-volatile memory). I find that the rest of the factory set
- configuration values work fine-
-
- I don't know why Motorola ISG can't include a simple set-up string in the
- manual, as all you really need to do is tell the modem to ignore DTR-
- nothing to it.
-
- BTW, the little clip-on ferrite bead is supposed to be clipped onto a loop
- of power-supply wire one inch from the modem- it helps suppress EMI
- radiation from the modem (makes modem meet FCC Class B requirement for
- computing devices, as I recall).
-
- Just my $0.02 worth-
